Edsger Institute

Edsger Institute is legally incorporated as a stichting ("foundation") under the law of the Netherlands. It was established in 2025 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by mr. M.L.E. Plaggemars from Damsté Notarissen. Stichting Edsger Institute is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce/Kamer van Koophandel under number 97873837. It has a Legal Entities and Partnerships Information Number (Rechtspersonen Samenwerkingsverbanden Informatie Nummer, RSIN): 868270118.

Mission

The mission of Edsger Institute is to:

  • contribute to the vision of an open internet that strengthens humanity and humaneness
  • promoting and lowering the threshold for the use of free and open technology as a collective social and economic good;
  • developing and managing strategic digital community goods in the public interest;
  • acting as a reliable and independent knowledge partner and think tank for administrative and democratic decision-making on the use of technology;
  • acting as an intermediary between the various actors and stakeholders in the technology chain: users and developers, academics, public and private organisations, and civil society;
  • researching new economic models for the sustainable use of technology developed in the public interest;
  • performing all other activities that are related to or may be conducive to the above in the broadest sense, as well as everything that is directly or indirectly related to or may be conducive to this, all in the broadest sense of the word.

As per its statutes, Edsger foundation was founded with the explicit intent to serve the public benefit, as a not-for-profit. A copy of the statutes (in its original language, Dutch) is available at the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce.

Board of directors

The foundation is governed by a non-remunerate board consisting of at a minimum three officers. Board members have a three year mandate, after which they need to be be re-elected. The board currently consists of:

  • Hans Onvlee — Treasurer
